You’ve got a lucrative job at the state department.
They send you to Mexico.
Which car that doesn’t need to comply with ANY saftey, emissions, or country of origin do you import?
A hybrid jetta of course. Not sold in Mexico incidentally.

I asked my mom if we could visit Tijuana while in San Diego next month.
She said no.

Mexican made Borgward
P100
230. Old enough for most import restrictions but this is the most interesting Mexican built car. 2267 were made so it’s fairly rare.

HHA (hoy he aprendido) there is a hybrid Jetta.
Up until this point, I thought a hybrid Jetta was a 1.8t with a Golf hood on it.
Golf hoods rule.

There is nothing of value in Tijuana.
What I do know many San Diego-nians do (specially those under 21) is go to Ensenada... a pretty nice place if you ask me!

I really wanted the jetta hybrid until I learnt the evils of twist beam

Yummy. Wish I could find one.
probably made here to avoid import restrictions.

Awww, torsion beam rears aren’t that bad. Lighter, stronger, cheaper, far less complex, and smaller than fully independent suspensions, but still much better than solid arms. Sort of an in-between compromise. I still prefer IRS for ride quality on rough pavement.

Yeah, and the new Jetta probably has it... Is it still available with a hybrid?
Who’d know.... but now its design is so weird I can’t bring myself to liking it.

without a doubt spanish, available everywhere...... followed by a spanglish/texmex hybrid, mostly available within about 150 miles of the U.S. border(reception can be spotty), followed distantly by broken english, (not available in some places)and hope to have available in the near future “americanized english”.........

Actually the production continued in Mexico as the main company folded in Germany. Some Mexican businessman bought the production tools but the production did continue only for 1967-70. The last German models were made in 1961 so the model was quite old when the Mexican production started.
It seems that some have survived and restored.

Have you seen some Diesel Nacional trucks that they sold before 1994? we used to be, well, used to having ages old tech in our hands.
That is fascinating and its probably one of the most interesting Mexican car stories I know. Companies now would never sell you the rights to a design...its a pitty because I have some great ideas for the Range Rover Classic.

Manual diesel and brown, correct?

These look pretty interesting. I guess they used old US body tools or borrowed the design heavily.

“borrowed the design”
Don’t be shy about it... We copied it
